Desktop Central now adds support for deploying Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows 2008 r2 that was released on Tuesday, Feb 22, 2011. To install SP 1 using Desktop Central, follow the steps below:
- Click Patch Mgmt tab

- Select Install/Uninstall –> Install Service Pack from Quick Links
- Select Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 2008 r2 SP1 from the list of service packs listed.
- Select the target computers and deploy.
Points to be Noted:
- Service Pack installation might fail in the following cases:
- When there is no enough space to install. The SP installation will fail with an unknown error 2146498520. Space requirements:
- Space required for installing Windows 7 (x86) SP1 – 4600MB
- Space required to install Windows 7 (x64) SP1 – 8300MB
- Space required to install Windows 2008 (x64) – 8300MB
- When update KB2454826 is not installed in the client computers. In this case, Desktop Central will automatically install this update and then install the SP1.
- If you wish to disable SP1 getting installed via Windows Update, you can deploy a registry configuration to update as below:
- Header Key : HKLM
- Sub Key : Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
- Data Type : REG_DWORD
- Value Name : DoNotAllowSP
- Value Data : 1
- Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7 (x64) SP1 will be detected in Desktop Central as Windows Server 2008 r2 (x64) SP1. However, this will not affect any functionalities until Microsoft releases patches over SP1. This will be fixed in our subsequent update by mid-March 2011.
Cheers!!
