Looking back at 2010

Applications Manager | December 29, 2010 | 2 min read

It’s been a busy 12 months for us here at ManageEngine Applications Manager team. While we continued to expand our user base, we also added key capabilities to Applications Manager and enhanced our existing feature set. Here is a quick recap of the year so far:

Breaking New Ground

Up until 2010, we were focusing primarily on monitoring the physical component of your IT infrastructure, including application servers, servers, databases, etc. This year, we broke new ground as far as monitoring capabilities are concerned. We ventured into virtualization monitoring as well as cloud monitoring. In fact, Applications Manager now lets you monitor the physical, virtual and cloud components of your hybrid IT environment from a single management console.

The Year of Add-ons

2010 can be called ‘the year of add-ons’ as far as Applications Manager is concerned. We introduced 4 new add-on features this year alone:

  1. Real Browser Monitor to monitor end-user experience from multiple locations including branch offices.
  2. Anomaly Detection  to proactively detect potential threats to application performance.
  3. VMware Monitor to monitor VMware ESX/ESXi host servers and their guest virtual machine instances.
  4. Amazon web services (AWS) to monitor Amazon EC2 and RDS instances and the apps running in the Amazon cloud.

Apart from these add-ons, there were additions to the base product too with features such as:

  • PostgreSQL monitoring
  • Memcached monitoring
  • REST APIs to integrate Applications Manager with internal portals and other monitoring tools.
  • Web Application groups to group web infrastructure into logical components such as servers, databases, etc.
  • Enhancements to Java runtime monitor, SNMP trap listener, and more.

A New Product Line

Although Applications Manager supports database monitoring, we found that DBAs needed a monitoring tool with more comprehensive performance metrics. And out of this need was born SQLDBManager Plus – a Microsoft SQL Server monitoring tool aimed at SQL Database Administrators.

Awards & Recognitions

It is always good to win awards as they are a recognition of your efforts toward serving your user community. This year we were honored to see two awards coming our way.

Finalist at Best of InterOp 2010: While we were developing our VMware monitor add-on, we previewed it to a select audience at the InterOp show in Las Vegas. Applications Manager was chosen as one of the finalists at ‘Best of Interop 2010’ under the virtualization category.

Windows IT Pro – Best Systems Monitoring Product: Applications Manager won silver in ‘Editor’s Best’ category and Bronze in the ‘Community Choice’ category at the 2010 Windows IT Pro awards.

Well, it’s been pretty eventful this year. Thanks for all your support. We look forward to an exciting 2011.

Happy New Year!
