IT admins need to know the status of their IT devices, servers, routers, switches, and firewalls. To meet this need, OpManager has a highly responsive and robust notification and alerting system that sends alerts via email, Slack, and even SMS.

Gateway SMS notifications to the rescue

Murphy’s law says anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and if you’re in IT, you’re probably familiar with how easily things can go wrong. When things do go wrong, manually checking on sites, apps, dashboards, or other channels to stay updated about events and severity alerts isn’t always effective.

Depending on push notifications or web alarms requires an IT admin to be glued to their screen to learn about disk space running low, websites going down, or CPU temperatures reaching critical levels. Should the internet go down, admins would have no way of knowing if any issues are surfacing.

So what’s a better alternative? SMS alerts are an effective way to ensure admins are instantly alerted about incidents, however there are limitations to this approach as well. Conventional modem/server-based SMS alerts have a limit on the number of SMS alerts that can be sent. On top of this, crowded modems can fail to receive SMS alerts.

To combat this, many organizations leverage SMS gateways, which provide high speeds and flexible sender address assignment, and require minimal or no hardware. SMS gateways also have no limit on the number of SMS alerts that can be sent, making them a far more scalable option. If you’re an OpManager user, you’re in luck! OpManager is a network monitoring tool that supports major SMS gateways like SMSEagle, Twilio, and Clickatell.

SMSEagle-OpManager integration

SMSEagle is a hardware-based SMS gateway for automatically sending and receiving SMS messages. The SMS is sent directly to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network without an active internet connection. You also need to ensure you have sufficient credit purchased to send SMS messages. You can find the steps to enable and configure the SMSEagle-OpManager integration here.

Twilio-OpManager integration

Twilio is a cloud communications platform for automatically sending and receiving SMS messages. The prerequisites for this configuration are:

  • You must have a Twilio account, a valid Twilio phone number, and enough credit to send SMS messages.

  • You must have an active internet connection.

Learn how to enable and configure the Twilio-OpManager integration here.

Clickatell-OpManager integration

A Clickatell account can be configured to send SMS texts to a phone or messages to your preferred application such as WhatsApp. Clickatell offers the Sandbox as a test environment. You will not be charged for the messages sent from the Sandbox.

You will need to enable REST API, and select one-way/two-way messaging as per your preference. Enter your mobile number, and generate a unique API key to be used to complete the configuration for the SMS gateway.
