Network devices often facing connection disruptions? IP conflicts might be the cause. IP address spaces in complex IT infrastructures can be tricky to manage without the right strategy. Mismanagement results in IP conflicts that cause connection disruptions and can cascade into major network issues, such as parts of your network shutting down. Troubleshooting these issues can be tedious and can take up a huge chunk of your network management time.
But what if we told you there are simple, easy, and effective ways to prevent IP address conflicts in your network? Eliminating IP address conflicts in your network helps you ensure constant network connectivity and network device communication.
IP address conflicts and your IPAM strategy
An IP address conflict occurs when a network device competes for an IP address assigned to another network device. Sometimes, the device that was initially assigned the IP address continues to access the network while the latter is disconnected. Other times, both devices face connection disruption. This results in a poor end-user experience and unreliable network connection, affecting devices spanning from end-user devices to business-critical network devices.
In most cases, the cause of an IP address conflict can be the issues in your IP address management (IPAM) strategy itself. The top-three issues that cause IP conflicts are:
- Data inconsistency: Data plays an important role in IPAM. You need to know how many IPs are allocated, used, and available. You should also be able to track the reserved IPs, IPs that are statically allocated, and IPs assigned to different network admins in your team. Lacking proper insight into these details or having any inconsistencies in this data can lead to IP address conflicts.
- The IP allocation strategy: Most networks use a combination of both static and dynamic IP allocation. While business-critical devices are often allocated IPs statically via manual configurations, components such as end-user devices have IPs assigned dynamically by DHCP servers. With an IPAM strategy in place, you need to ensure you have clear distinction and isolation between the pool of IPs reserved for manual allocation and the IPs that are to be dynamically assigned by DHCP servers. Failing to do so could lead to IP address conflicts in your network.
- Faulty IP management devices: It’s no news that networks are increasingly relying on DHCP servers for dynamic IP allocation. While these IP management devices save time and effort when it comes to managing a huge network address space, any issues in these IP management devices can easily lead to IP conflicts. This is why it’s important that you build an IPAM strategy that includes monitoring the scope and availability of your DHCP servers.
