Desktop Central allows you to complete different tasks using the Configurations feature. For example, if you want to display a Welcome Message on the screen of all the computers in your network, you can create and deploy a configuration for the same. After you have deployed a configuration, you can view the status of that configuration on the Web console of Desktop Central.

Status Messages

There are different status messages that apply to a configuration. These are as follows:

  • Draft: This status applies to configurations or collections that are saved as drafts. The configuration can either be complete with the required settings or incomplete. An administrator can deploy a configuration that is saved as a draft when required.

  • Draft-Download in Progress: This status applies to configurations or collections that are created with settings required to install patches or service packs. When you deploy a configuration to install patches or service packs, the patches or service packs defined in the configuration will be downloaded from the vendor’s Web site. These patches or service packs are stored locally before being applied to respective target computers. When the patches and service packs are being downloaded, the Draft-Download in Progress status is displayed on the screen.

  • Ready To Execute: This status applies to configurations or collections that can be deployed and applied. When a configuration is defined successfully and deployed, you see the ‘Ready To Execute’ status displayed on the screen. This is the initial status of all configurations or collections that are defined and deployed. Configurations are applied when:

    • Users log in (for user configurations)
    • Computers start up (for computer configurations)
    • During an agent’s 90-minute refresh interval

  • In Progress: This status applies to configurations or collections that are defined for one of more users or computers and successfully applied to any one of the users or computers. The status of the configuration changes from ‘Ready to Execute’ to ‘In Progress’.The status will remain as ‘In Progress’ till the configuration is applied to all the defined target computers or users.

  • Retry-In Progress: This status applies to configurations or collections that fail to get deployed. When the deployment fails in one or more target computers, it is re-deployed on computers in which the deployment has failed. The number of times the configuration is re-deployed depends on the configuration of the execution settings. When the re-deployment of the configuration is in progress, you see the ‘Retry-In Progress’ status on the screen.

  • Suspended: This status applies to configurations or collections that have been deployed but have been suspended by the administrator. You can only suspend configurations that have the status ‘Ready to Execute’ or ‘In Progress’.

  • Executed: This status applies to configurations or collections that have been deployed successfully to all target computers or users.

Viewing the Status

To view the status of a configuration, follow the steps given below:

  1. Click the Configurations tab
  2. In the Status column, click the status message

You can see a summary of the status of the configuration that you have deployed to computers in your network. To view the status of the configuration for each computer, in the Target Definition section, click on the status against the computer for which you want to view the status report.

Benefits

The benefits of viewing the status reports for configurations that have been deployed include the following:
  • Enables you to check the summary of the status of the configuration

  • Enables you to check the status of the configurations for individual computers at individual levels. For example, if you have deployed 100 patches for computers in your network, you can view how many patches have been deployed successfully to a single computer

  • Allows you to keep a track of the status by exporting the summary in PDF or by printing it

  • Displays a compact view of the configuration. For example, you can view the description, category, time of creation and modification, type of configuration, settings to retry and summary of the total number of the computers to which a configuration has been deployed
