Our last blog(in this series) was about Branch Office monitoring using IP group. In the previous blog about branch office, we explained how to measure the bandwidth utilization by the applications using the IP group. The IP group helps network administrators to monitor whether the business-critical applications effectively utilize the allocated bandwidth. Measuring the performance of an application using IP group with WAN RTT functionality gives accurate measurements in regard to bandwidth utilization and round trip time.

Let us consider the same scenario explained in part one of this series. A company has three sites Site A , Site B and Site C.Site B is where the data center is located and the Business-Critical applications are hosted on servers in the data center. Users in Site A and Site C require uninterrupted access to the applications hosted in the data center servers. Network Administrator resolved the delay in accessing the application by setting QoS policy, which allocated 90 % of bandwidth.

Then, he wanted to verify the effectiveness of policies set and the response time (Round Trip time), to ensure that SLAs are met.

Creating IP group and associating to WAN RTT Monitoring:

The Network Administrator created an IP group (from Admin -> IP Groups) in NetFlow Analyzer, associating the IP Address of the server running the share point. He also associated the port and the protocol used by the application. Associating the ports ensure that traffic from a particular application alone is captured by the IP Group.

He then selected the IP SLA WAN RTT monitor to monitor for this IP group and assigned Router A as a source router and defined the threshold values. After a couple of days, he generated traffic reports during business hours on the IP Group to ensure that the allocated bandwidth is effectively utilized. The Network Administrator also generated a report for WAN RTT monitoring by Navigating to Modules ——> Cisco IP SLA, he found that the RTT was well below the defined threshold.

WAN Rtt Reports :-

The WAN Round Trip Time(RTT) Monitor of NetFlow Analyzer is an add-on tool, that monitors latency between two locations. The WAN RTT monitor measures round trip time and helps resolving poor WAN performance. It is also helpful in monitoring Quality of Service(QoS) across WAN links provided by the Internet service provider(ISP) and alerts are generated when the set threshold limits are violated.

The WAN Monitor Dashboard gives you a quick over view about all monitors in the network and their corresponding activities. Apart from this WAN RTT has three tabs:

>. Overview Report

>. All Monitors

>. Settings

Overview Report:

The Overview tab gives following information in Widgets:

Least Performing Path:

All paths and their delay are displayed in a descending fashion along with their round trip time value, giving you a clear idea about least performing paths. Here you can view the details of the path by clicking on it.

Least Available Path:

All paths and their availability are displayed in an ascending fashion, along with their availability percentage. This gives you an overview about least available paths.

TimeWise Consolidated Alert for Top RTT:

All paths that have violated the set threshold limits are displayed here along with their severity status and and a message indicating the round trip time and the threshold limit.

Monitor wise Health Report:

This displays severity status of the monitor on an hourly and daily basis. You can choose the monitor that you want to view from the drop down box.

All Monitors:

The “All Monitors” tab displays all the available paths that are being monitored. By clicking the path name you can view path, and threshold details along with NetFlow Traffic reports of the routers. The graphs indicate threshold violation percentage, Error Percentage and Round Trip Time. You can also add, remove and view the history of monitors created so far using “All Monitors” tab.

Settings :

The Settings tab is the place where you can create new monitor by defining the threshold for monitoring.

NetFlow Analyzer with IP group and WAN RTT features helps network administrators to identify Performance issue on the network.
