Hope our blog’s on various device configurations has helped you to monitor traffic utilization from different devices in your network. In this blog, we will discuss a feature that can give you a better visibility on network traffic and it patterns.

One of the most common question asked when discussing about traffic analytics is “How do I see the traffic heading to each website ?”. NetFlow Analyzer has pre-configured IP groups for Social Networking sites, Sports sites, etc. which can give a consolidated report on traffic going to all of the IP Addresses added to the IP Group. You can also create new IP Groups with individual IP Addresses to see each IP specific report which can also show DNS names if the “nslookup” of IP address done from the NetFlow Analyzer server resolves these public IP Address.

To make these reports more user friendly, we have the “Top Sites” feature in NetFlow Analyzer. The top sites that contribute to the traffic in your network can be found by going to the “Top Sites” tab under the applications tab of an interface.

This “Top Sites” view will give a list of applications contributing to the traffic and expanding the applications will give the name of the site (if the DNS is resolved) and names of top 10 machines in your network (if the DNS is resolved) connecting to that site. It will also give the contribution of traffic in terms of upload and download volume (and % of total traffic) from each IP address to the particular site using that application.

You can also view list of sites and end points using a particular application by selecting the application from the drop down.

For Eg.

In the below “top sites” report, (1) I have selected the sites accessed through HTTP application (shown as 1 in the below screen shot). You can see a list of 10 site in one view. (2) If there are more than 10 sites, then you can scroll through all of them by clicking the scroll.

You can drill down further by expanding a particular site usage. This way you can view the list of internal IP addresses that have used the site. This will also give the traffic (volume) uploaded / downloaded by each of the IP’s.

Let us know what else you would like to see in NetFlow Analyzer on the reporting or technology front and we will try to work on this. To see Top Sites, download NetFlow Analyzer today.
