Whether we like or not, trends in the internet traffic are changing rapidly making Google the second largest ISP. Networkworld.com on their recent post highlighted on this issue and discussed on “Why IT managers should care about this and other Internet traffic trends“. According to them Google solely carries 6.4% internet traffic.

Chief Scientist Craig Labovitz, Arbor Networks, says “Enterprise network managers need to focus more on the content and services they are delivering over the Internet, and less on Internet transport“. This ultimately emphasizes on the need for better network bandwidth monitoring. Only when the network administrator gains in-depth visibilty of the network, we could expect better performance and this could be achieved only with intelligent network bandwidth management.

The network bandwidth management has always been there from the birth of web but only in the recent times it has gained importance. Thanks to social media and other peer to peer applications that is purely responsible for this drastic change. There is so much uncontrolled traffic these days forces network administrators to think about all possible techniques to optimize their network performance. One way to achieve better network performance is to classify unwanted traffic and prioritize business critical applications. That would require the network administrator to set up strict Quality of Service policies and monitor the network traffic closely. But how could you achieve this?

Class-Based Quality of Service(CBQoS)  is one simple technique that network administrators could use in order to prevent users from monopolizing the network bandwidth. This way they can easily prioritize business critical applications and drop unwanted traffic. CBQoS has to be enabled on the router manually, and then, the policies have to be defined on the router. Once set up, you can get the help of a monitoring tool like ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer to gain better visibility of the network.

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer supports CBQoS and provides an elaborate view on the QoS policies deployed within an organization. It performs Class-Based Quality of Service (CBQoS) monitoring to ensure that your traffic prioritization policies are effective. The NetFlow Analyzer helps you to effortlessly validate your QoS policies even on large sized networks. An anomaly in the network can cost an enterprise dear, irrespective of its size. With ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer you can have a better picture of the network with the Real-time Bandwidth Monitoring, that details you on the top talkers, top applications, and top protocols. NetFlow analyzer gives you the much needed network visibility and helps you enforce QoS on the mission critical applications with much ease.

Happy Monitoring!
