This Week’s Five is a weekly column on five recent reads from all over the web. This week, we’ll talk about digital transformation.

It works that fast: I was sipping coffee and surfing the internet when I looked up to see a security camera recording me, and feeding this near real-time data to a data center. I realized then that I had become part of the same digital world I was surfing. It hasn’t always been like this. It’s taken a long time for digital transformation to get where it is today. In general, it takes a lot more time, technology, and resources than the average person imagines.

So what exactly is digital transformation all about? And why should we care about it any way? Well, there are a lot more W’s attached to it. Let’s start with the “what”: Digital transformation is the implementation of new and innovative technologies to enhance agility, productivity, and collaboration across a business. In the present context, it tends to buzz around certain topics such as cloud, IoT, big data, mobility, and virtualization. And as far as “why” is concerned, Darwin’s theory answers that perfectly: Only the fittest survive

So where do we go from here? It varies from company to company. For a company that deals with on-premise applications, cloud might be the next big step. As Intel’s CEO professes, there are only two types of companies: those that have digitally transformed, and those that are dead. Yes, dead! It’s like Darwin’s theory all over again.

So how do you save your company? I would say, GO CLOUDY! Cloud is everywhere. It’s a physical node killer, centralizing and connecting everything around us. And it goes hand in hand with everything else. Software Defined Networking virtualizes physical infrastructure, facilitates on-demand products and helps your transition to the cloud. IoT will lead to billions of connected devices by 2020, generating petabytes of data. Where will it go? In the cloud, obviously.

Transformation doesn’t happen on its own. Whether it’s the main player or not, the cloud alone isn’t enough. EVERYTHING has to be next generation. Take ITSM for example. You cannot continue with the same old service manager. Transformations demand change management. Similarly, IoT demands CMDB and asset management. New service management tools have to include these features. And if your ITSM tool is a plus version, everything else has to be a plus version as well. Just like how you can’t run a car with new tires and an old engine, you can’t run your IT efficiently unless every tool, be it active directory management, network management, or asset management, is in sync.

What if I told you there’s a toolbox that can house everything you need to transform your IT and keep your company alive? Well, there is one. It’s called ManageEngine. Need network management? We’ve got it. Need server management? We’ve got it. Need mobile device monitoring, application management, analytics, security tools, asset management, or CMDB? We’ve got it all and that too with both on-premise and on-demand versions. So go ahead, do your research and uncover your IT infrastructure needs. We’ll be here.
