Many organizations including Google, Amazon, Zoho, and Twitter have adopted remote working due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. To be safe and to practice social distancing, your organization might have also adopted telecommuting. However, with the sudden shift to remote work, password-related issues will be one of the major concerns facing the IT team, as forgotten and expired passwords will affect user productivity.
Securing your enterprise outside the wall
Here are a few concerns for remote users and IT admins:
Remote password resets
Remote employees who forget their passwords will call their help desk. Since the user machine is not connected to the organization’s corporate network, even if the IT team resets the user password in Active Directory, it will not be reflected in their user machine. In cases like these, remote employees productivity is negatively affected.
Alerting the VPN and OWA about password expiration
Remote users often let their Windows AD passwords expire unintentionally because they stay logged in to their machines for long periods without logging out, or aren’t connected to the corporate network where they receive password expiration reminders. Expired passwords result in more password-related help desk tickets to the IT team and reduced work hours for the remote employees.
Ensuring endpoint access security
Passwords that are easy to steal, leaked, or repeats of previously used passwords, or passwords that have no secondary authentication factor are outdated in the security world. Securing endpoint access for remote users is a major priority, as they could contain an organization’s sensitive and confidential resources.
