Capacity planning reports help organizations to plan future IT requirements. We have extensively discussed capacity planing reports in our previous blog posts. In NetFlow Analyzer 9, we have introduced Application Growth Report as a part of Capacity Planning.
Application Growth Report helps in identifying the usage of Business-Critical applications in the Network. It gives a graphical view of the behavior of the applications on the network which help in studying the trends in the past.
The Application Growth Report helps in finding answers to some important questions about your network which are:
1) Is the usage of Business-Critical applications increasing day-by-day ?
2) Do my Business-Critical applications require additional bandwidth allocation ?
3) What is traffic pattern of other applications when compared to the Business-Critical applications ?
4) Is there any interference from other applications used in the network that affects the performance of Business-Critical applications ?
Once you have answered all these questions you will identify your need to either expand the Network or effectively manage the existing policies according to the current usage.
Say you have a network where “Citrix” is one of your Business-Critical applications. The reports indicate the usage of “Citrix” in the Network. It also shows some other applications like http, smtp, pop3, https etc. being used to a similar extent, which are not very critical to run the business.
The above report shows that some non-critical applications have received high priority in the network. To avoid this, the QoS policies have to be changed. The “Citrix” application should be given maximum priority and all other non-critical applications could do with minimum. By comparing the reports after implementation of QoS, you can evaluate the difference in bandwidth usage. The following report shows that the bandwidth used by non-critical applications has reduced.
The NetFlow Analyzer’s Application Growth Report not only helps in Capacity planning but also in managing, prioritizing and delivering bandwidth performance.
