WAN RTT with NetFlow Analyzer

NetFlow Analyzer | April 27, 2011 | 2 min read

NetFlow Analyzer version 9 is released with advanced set of features which takes Bandwidth Monitoring many yards away from the traditional traffic analysis, reporting, capacity planning etc. One of major feature which comes in more attraction with this major release is Cisco IP SLA based WAN RTT monitoring.

NetFlow Analyzer’s latest version is making waves in the networking circuit with its new set of features that takes you to the next level of bandwidth monitoring. This blog gives you an insight on the much awaited IP SLA Monitor based on Cisco’s IP SLA technology.

Cisco IP SLA

Cisco IPSLA is a feature included in the Cisco IOS Software that gives administrators the ability to analyze service levels for IP applications and services. IPSLA uses active traffic-monitoring technology to monitor continuous traffic on the network. This is a most trusted method in measuring over head network performance. Cisco Routers provide IP SLA Responders that give accuracy of measured data across a network.

With IP SLAs, routers and/or switches perform periodic measurements. The exact number and type of available measurements depends on the IOS version. IP SLAs are widely used in networks to generate time-based network and services performance data. IP SLA is often used with SNMP and NetFlow to generate complete network level data, which can help track down network related performance issues and ensure service level agreements are met.

WAN RTT

WAN Round Trip Time (RTT), monitor measures round trip time and helps resolve poor WAN performance. It is also helpful in monitoring Quality of Service(QoS) across WAN links provided by your Internet service provider(ISP) and alerts are generated when the set threshold limits are violated.

WAN is the most expensive part of managing the corporate network. Network Engineers or Administrator should kept informed of outage, unprincipled usage and intermittent WAN connectivity. Cisco IP SLA based WAN RTT monitoring helps administrators to troubleshoot WAN outages, Performance issues instantaneously.

When it comes to corporate network management Application Performance across the WAN is critical. At the time of performance issue, decision on upgrading the WAN pipe is not a permanent and cheaper solution. WAN RTT monitoring provides details on WAN link latency, bandwidth utilization, Round-Trip-Time and other performance factors to completely diagnose and resolve poor WAN performance before thinking of upgrading WAN bandwidth capacity.

With Cisco IP SLA WAN RTT monitoring, Network Administrator gets  the following advantages:

1. Isolating Problematic WAN Link

2. Detecting slow performance WAN links

3. Reports on latency

4. High Profile Reports for Decision making.

WAN RTT monitoring with NetFlow traffic analysis gives a clear picture on what is happening in the network so that administrators can take appropriate measures to improve network performance. We will come up with WAN RTT configuration and Reporting in our next blog.
