Some old tech still beats the new stuff

New doesn't always mean better. New gadgets and new software updates are released all the time; in some cases, they may be better than the old versions. In some cases, they aren't. But tech can’t stay the same—tech is constantly under pressure to evolve and be better than the last release. So, tech companies are also made to innovate and update continuously, but sometimes it’s just not there yet. In those cases, it’s better to stick to old tech if it’s actually better.

We have a few thoughts on tech that may be old and but remains on top.

Wired gadgets are the way to go

Many hold the opinion that wired tech is better than non-wired. To fight my case, let's talk about good old wired earphones. Mics in Bluetooth earbuds are so bad, sometimes I have to shout to make my point across while traveling or when I’m on the road. But the wired earphones don’t disappoint. The mic is so much better and typically there are extra features like noise cancellation. They're also a fashion statement for some.

This also applies to wireless chargers. There are some tried and tested wireless chargers, but most of them don't hold up to wired chargers. Wireless chargers cause phones to heat up, degrading the battery over time, which is something no one wants. Even though there are a lot of wireless options on the market, wired gadgets still seem to be popular and efficient compared to their non-wired counterparts.

New but bad updates

The "don’t fix what isn’t broken" rule doesn’t apply to the tech world at all. Tech giants are always trying to make what’s good even better. The result? We're sometimes stuck with not-so-good upgrades.

Often, iOS updates don't have the features we want, Android updates are glitchy, and we're forced to just live with them and hope the next update is something better. I know people who refuse to update to a newer version because they just don’t like the look or feel of it. There are games, apps, browsers, and more that release new updates that don't always work. If it doesn’t pose a security risk, then it may be worth sticking to the version that you actually like.

Gadgets that are overly smart

We don’t like it when someone acts like a know-it-all, and the same applies to gadgets as well. We are in an era where we are receiving notifications from our dryer, washing machine, fridge, stove, and almost any other appliance you can think of. Some people like it, finding it convenient to switch off their fridge when they're not at home or know what temperature the clothes in the washer are at, but some people really don’t and prefer something simpler and more to the point. A quick run to the electronics store will show you options from a fridge with a screen and a camera to an AC with AI built-in. Sometimes with gadgets these days, I feel like saying, “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

Some of us need an AC to be an AC, a fridge to be a fridge, and a dryer to just be a dryer.

A final word

We are living in a world where everything is evolving, but sometimes evolution takes trial and error, and we are stuck dealing with a lot of errors. But we can always look back at old tech that's as good as new and, more often than not, better than its successors. Good old wired earphones, a simple fridge that only refrigerates, or iOS 12—they all had exactly what we needed and nothing more, and maybe that's ALL we actually need (for now).
