This can be overcome by using SNMP monitoring capability if the device or application is SNMP enabled. You could load an SNMP MIB and add attributes to be monitored. AM will do the rest for you 🙂

Another possible way to do custom monitoring is by using the custom script monitor. You could use perl/ linux scripting to get data from different data sources and return its output to Applications Manager in the form of a text file. This can then be picked up by AM and you get the usual thresholds, alerts, reports, graphs etc.
