Security threats can take many forms and the most common of them is Intrusion.
It can take many forms , typically as Spoof of MACaddress, an airjack, Constant traffic or it may be even a client sending spurious traffic to threaten WLAN security.
I will explain a few of them here and how WiFi Manager can help you in securing your WLAN:
Beware of spoofing.. an attacker tries and alters the MAC address to that of an authorized device's MAC and keeps sending repeat packets into the WLAN.
Another typical Intrusion Attack is Airjack, All that is required to carry out this attack is a Linux laptop, wireless client adapter based on prism II chipset and the Air Jack driver, using which raw 802.11 frames can be injected into the wireless LAN.
What happens when there is constant traffic attack, sometimes, inorder to deliberate overloading the AP , attackers may inject a lot of packets using wireless clients. This may cause non-availability of bandwidth for the other users in the wifi.
What you can do in WiFi Manager to be aware and listening to your network, is real simple. You can configure alarms to be generated in case of these intrusions just in a few clicks and instruct the method of notification. And there, you get alarms which can save your network from a whole lot of insecurities.

This time, we made sure that the upgrade patch is also available with the release. That means you can upgrade your installation of WiFi Manager using the Upgrade Patch. Click here to access the patch.
(Please note that this patch works for upgrading from 4.3 to 4.5. If you are running 4.2 build, you will have to upgrade first to 4.3 and then to 4.5)

Did you turn things upside down in your WiFiManager when you faced a typical issue - your Cisco Vx works not being discovered properly?
Just Freeze . The solution is a one liner " your credentials may be incorrect"
To check out the correct credentials for this device, here's what you can do:
1.Go to the device interface by entering the http://IP-address of the device.
2.Now the screen showing the details with Tabs as Home, Network associations, logs and setup details.
3.Here you can click on the Setup details to enter the Express setup
4.Now you can click on the Security Link under Services Tab as shown in the screen shot-1.
5.This takes you to the Login details page where you can click on the User Information.
6.You can note the SNMP community that is shown here under the username category-Screenshot-2
7.This community can be supplied while adding credentials when adding CiscoVx Works device for discovery.
Remember..not to do this...
(Please note that you need not consider the community shown under the SNMP Link which shows only the SNMP Trap Community.)
You can see the screenshots here:
Screenshot1 shows the device Interface and the Security link:

Screenshot 2 shows you the proper SNMP community of the device:

Do you keep receiving email alerts for that default SSID being used or that the EAP is disabled? Are you frustrated by the repeated alerts you get? Here's the simple way out..You can very well instruct your WiFiManager to stop notifying you about it. Just follow these steps:
When you have opened your webclient,
1.Traverse to "Fault Tab" >> Alarm Settings.
2.Click on the Alarm category- say, Vulnerability Alarm link - if its the EAP or SSID alert I am talking about.
3.Uncheck the option against the EAP Disabled" or "the Default SSID in use"
4.Click on Finish.

And that's it. You have done it! You will stop receiving those notification alerts repeatedly!

It looks like the 802.11n is now somewhere, everywhere but nowhere. While it is not yet officially declared as the final word, the last few months seem to have had enough grapewines buzzing about the IEEE 's 802.11n! The 802.11 legacy had techniques defined by b,a, and g as amendments to the original standard, and it was later enhanced with 802.11i. Other standards in the family (c?f, h?j, ) are service enhancements to previous specifications.
In 802.11n, data throughput is estimated to reach a 540M bit and estimated to be 10 times speedier than the earlier a' or g' standards. More promises to support all platforms like consumer electronics/personal computing etc in all environments like hotspots, enterprises or the homeusers are what 802.11n seem to have in store.
While the latest addition to the Pre-802.11n market are Linksys with their broadband routers and wireless notebook adapters, who will closely follow Buffaloe Technologies, Netgear,Dlink in the list are still a hot prediction as everybody seems to be waiting for the standard to settle into the real world. Any futurists out there...?

Unwinding from business and escaping into a internet free world when on flight can be a thing of past. Now we have Hotspots in the Sky!!!!!!!
Thanks to Singapore Airlines and Connexions, I was able to experience inflight internet on my way to Sydney from Singapore. Though I knew these hotspots are available for quite sometime now, experiencing it for the first time was really exciting but for the minor irritants. The guy in front of me was enjoying his journey with a good nap and had pushed back his seat which forced me to hold my laptop in a unique position to enjoy the connection.
Did I say that the connection was given free for half an hour!!!

While trying to learn to swim in the Techy waters and also fishout any new terminologies here, I did have a good catch, almost a net ful ! What I found interesting is the term "phishing", it means an identity theft via email...
What happens when you receive an email directing you to an almost "look alike" web site of a well known (finanacial or any) organisation, asking you to put in your bank A/c no, credit card details, social security etc? Althogh most of us may ignore/delete such mails, its not difficult for the "phisher" to exploit the vulnerable lot.

Great to know that Aruba Networks one of the pioneers in the wlan switch industry, has had their first profitable quarter. Their revenue has exceeded their operational expenses by more than $1 Million for the fiscal quarter ended 31st Jan. Well done Aruba, keep going !!!!!!!!
This also highlights the current trend. WiFi initially seen as a immature and insecure technology is now being looked up as a bit matured technology and is seeing its adoption in many industries. Thanks to the improved standards, security enhancements and the patronage given by the health and educational sectors. Most of the startups who have had a tough time in 2004 are now breathing easily.
Look out for similar news from other big players!!!!!!!!!!!
