[ <b>Mood:</b> Amused ]<br />Recently we had a customer who asked if its possible to monitor multiple instances of a similar process as if they are related. The processes had the name patterned as httpd1.exe,httpd2.exe,httpd3.exe etc. This scenario could come if these processes behave as if they are load balaced. Hence if atleast one is running, then donot alert me.

Well this is supported. Here is what you need to do in the Applications Manager web client :

1) After adding the server for monitoring, add one of the processes for monitoring. Say httpd1.exe.

2) Now go and Edit this process name to just ‘httpd’. Save and wait for a poll to complete.

3)You will see the number of instances for that process then. Now you can go and configure an alert to match whatever criteria you want.

I agree this is not obvious :-( and not documented :-( But it works :-)

I am a frequent visitor of Techdirt. But this website has been giving PHP errors (in their home page and other articles’ pages ) for more than 1/2 an hour now. What do you call techdirt itself getting techdirt(ed) ?

Your website could have the same problems too.

Be proactive and use ManageEngine Applications Manager ! You could run a simple url monitor check to ensure there are no errors, ensure you pages respond fast and everything is fine.

Guys we have a free edition too.

[ <b>Mood:</b> Happy ]<br />[ <b>Currently:</b> Reading ]<br />Some users complain on the non availability of out-of-the-box capability for some types of applications and devices. This can be overcome by using SNMP monitoring capability if the device or application is SNMP enabled. You could load an SNMP MIB and add attributes to be monitored. AM will do the rest for you :-)

Another possible way to do custom monitoring is by using the custom script monitor. You could use perl/ linux scripting to get data from different data sources and return its output to Applications Manager in the form of a text file. This can then be picked up by AM and you get the usual thresholds, alerts, reports, graphs etc.

[ <b>Mood:</b> Cool ]<br />[ <b>Currently:</b> Working ]<br />Many users ask how they can configure the right thresholds for the various metrics in Applications Manager. We do not give default thresholds for all metrics because this may not hold good for all environments.

Here is what you can do. You can run the server for a few days or even a week. Now go and check out the reports - hint: click the ‘7′ icon. This report gives you hourly average values and hence you can get a feel of what threshold values are good for your environment.

Stewart McKie has covered Google Maps integration with Applications Manager, in his www.innomate.biz. The article is available as a PDF - IT Resource Visualization

Quote:
IT Resource VisualizationLocation analytics is fast becoming one of the most interesting areas of IT innovation. ManageEngine?s Applications Manager has now been integrated with Google Maps to create an interesting implementation of IT Resource Visualization and a great example of IT innovation.IT managers in charge of complex IT infrastructures spread over multiple geographical locations have an obvious problem: How do I keep on top of my network resources to minimize downtime? The challenge for IT infrastructure management application vendors is how to make this task easier. One way is by providing better visualization.

Graphical network visualization has been around for some time but now applications have a new resource to leverage: Google Maps. By layering Google Maps onto existing IT resource management applications, vendors can provide instant visualization capabilities. This is what ManageEngine Applications Manager now offers.

By leveraging Google Maps in this way, ManageEngine provides IT managers with an easy way to gain real-time situational awareness over an IT infrastructure that may include: Application, Network and Web Servers; web sites; Java applications; SNMP network devices and popular database management systems.

This is a great example of IT innovation at work and something I expect we will see being added to CRM, ERP and other enterprise business management applications to give them a whole new layer of business visualization.

Olle Bergstr?m, WM-data Sverige AB, Sweden shared his views on working with ManageEngine Applications Manager.

“Applications Manager of all things was very easy to use, right out of the box! Agentless Monitoring really makes life easy for administrators. It is very understandable and fast to learn, I didn’t even read the manual.”

So much for writing the manual! (OK….that was a personal take).

Anyways, we can now proudly hang the “Easy to Use Software” signboard at our door. :D
