Ohayo Gozaimasu Tokyo, ITSMF Japan

Konnichiwa Tokyo

"Mina-san Konnichiwa. gomenasai, nihongo wakarimasen" that means "Hello everyone. Sorry. I don't speak Japanese". Those were the only words I could learn before the presentation. ITSMF was a focused event in Japan, it had a lot of participants but actually a few exhibitors. However, the who's who in ITSM were there. It was a little different compared to the trade shows in the US because here I got to know that people take time to understand vendors and then commission a team or third party to evaluate software.

7 Point Approach to Effective ITSM

I chose a simple 7 point approach to help business with a clean ITIL implementation. In the Google era, glut of information seems to be problem. IT Managers and IT staff are confused with too much of information from vendors, ITIL trainers, and consultants. My presentation focused on some what people should focus on and how to keep the implementation simple.
  • Where should I start?
  • What are the  key processes to start with?
  • How should I move forward?
  • Managing the first roadblocks
  • Choosing the right team and tasks
  • Managing Failures
  • The Main Thing
Examples from customer environments and how they were able to successfully roll-out ITSM in a short span of time, was well received.

ITSM vendors on SaaS

There are a very few vendors offering ITSM on SaaS in Japan. We were glad to present ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus on the cloud - Beta . Although there was lot of excitement over the cloud offering, most of the businesses were in the evaluation phase. I believe that its a matter of trying it out personally to be sure. For a long time, I thought I will not like Japanese food, until I tried it.

Microsoft, on Monday, 2nd August 2010, released an out of band security bulletin MS10-046 to address a vulnerability in the handling of shortcuts. The vulnerability affects all current versions of Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

The patches pertaining to this bulletin have been tested by our patch assessment team and the online patch database have been updated with these patches. You can update the patch database at your local Desktop Central installation to install these patches.

Cheers!

Java update fails with time out error

Jun 22 2010 06:10:52 AM Posted By : romanus
Hi

You may encounter Java update failures with the below given two reasons.
  1. Time out or
  2. Error occurred while processing the configuration
What is the reason for failure?

The technical reason behind this is, the JQS (Java Quick Starter service).   A process called jqs.exe will run in the background in order to allow quick start-up of Java applications. It would be loaded immediately after the Windows startup.  Due to this process which is running already on the client computer, the Java update fails.

More on Java quick starter service .

How to resolve?

While deploying the Patches, you need to select 'Install during computer startup' from 'Install Options' in 'Deployment Settings'. (Install Patch Configuration -> Deployment Settings in Step 2: -> Install Options: -> Install during computer startup)

It ensures that java update starts before the JQS and hence the update won't fail.

Trust this helps.

End of Life!

Jun 16 2010 01:40:07 AM Posted By : nandini
In the Asset Lifecycle once an aging asset begins to hamper productivity, the organization needs to have a formal end of life strategy in place concerning final disposition. Final disposition is clearly more complex than simply throwing a desktop out with the trash. There are several issues and recycling options to mull over that go beyond getting rid of the old machine and receiving a new desktop. These issues include:

  • Can the machine be moved to another end-user with fewer needs?
  • Conversely, is there another machine in the Agency that will meet this end-user’s needs?
  • Even if the asset is obsolete, what about the parts, both hardware and software?
  • Can the licensed software be used on other assets?
  • Can the parts be relocated within the organization?
  • Is there any proprietary information on the machine?
  • Who erased the information on the machine?
  • Can the asset be donated?

  • If the asset is donated, what happens with the licensed software?
  • What process is in place to ensure proper final disposition of donated assets?
  • Who certified that all the information on the hard drive was erased?
  • Does your Agency have e-waste recycling contracts in place?
All of these questions need to be answered in the ITAM organism you have in place.

When assets are leased it is just as vital to have an end-of-life strategy in place. Paying out huge penalties can shrink the savings associated with leasing when lessors are not notified before the end of the asset disposition; an ITAM system in place can make available a reminder when notification of the lessor is due, tell you where the leased assets are installed or being stored, and evaluate their original and current configuration.
